"Shahada" is witnessing that "There is no God but (the one) God and that Muhammed is the messenger of God." This declaration of the oneness and unique nature of God along with the affirmation of the Prophecy of the Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings of God be upon him), is the heart of the religion, upon which all other aspects are built.
How does someone become a Muslim?
It is the Islamic viewpoint that all people are born Muslim, in that "Muslim" means one who submits to the will of God. But as the child grows he/she is either indoctrinated by their family with different beliefs or rejects religion all together. For these the process of re-declaring faith is simple. Saying the "Shahada" is all that is required to enter into the brotherhood of Islam. By this declaration the believer announces his/her faith in all God's messengers and the scriptures they brought and makes a commitment to follow all the Islamic duties enjoined upon the Muslim like Prayer, Fasting, Charity and Pilgrimage.
