Carpet is usually installed over padding in most residential settings.
Choosing the correct padding is very important when choosing your carpet.

The primary purpose of padding is to protect the carpeting.
Padding provides insulation against extreme changes in temperature as well as providing sound insulation. Proper padding increases the life of the your carpet. Padding can help to fill minor unevenness in the subfloor. Choosing the right padding will make your carpet more comfortable.

Helpful Advise: Try walking on a sample of the carpeting over the various padding choices . This way you can see how the carpet will look and feel when installed.

Padding choice is particularly important . The manufacturer will often have  specific padding requirements for installation. If the requirements are not met the warranties may be invalidated.  Please read the warranty thoroughly to ensure that your padding selection meets the manufacturers requirements. Our Sale team will be happy to explain these warranties to you.

Special needs require different padding choices .
The elderly or the handicapped who will be using a wheelchair or walker, require padding that is thin and dense to  ensure safety.

Lastly the style of the carpeting needs to  be considered in your padding choice. Styles such as Berber require special types of pad.  This style of carpet does not wear well over thick, soft padding.  The best padding for Berber carpeting is the firmer types of pad such as Jute and Synthetic Fiber Pad.

Padding Terms and Definitions

"Thickness" is defined be the depth of the pad which is generally from 1/4 to 9/16 of an inch.

"Density" is the weight per cubic foot of a particular padding.

Padding may be exactly the same in thickness but be very different in density.
The higher the density the more the resistance there is to the pressure of footsteps. Generally padding with the highest density comes in the thicker padding.

Jute pads are classified by weight.
Weight refers to ounces per square yard. Thickness goes up as the weight increases.

                                                            Types of Padding

Jute is made of natural materials .This type of pad is very firm.

Synthetic Fiber Pad is made with synthetic fibers, such as nylon, polypropylene and polyester.

Urethane Foam is the most commonly used style of pad.  Pad thickness range from 3/8 to 9/16 of an inch. The densities can range from 1.2 to 6 pounds per cubic foot.  Remember all thickness are available in many different densities.

Rebond Foam is a urethane created from waste material produced while manufacturing other urethane products. The pieces are shredded into very small pieces and bonded into a single sheet. Thickness range from 3/8 to 9/16 of an inch and the densities range from 3.5 to 10 pounds per cubic foot.  For residential use 6 to 8 pounds is excellent.
